| Personal History | Macon (pronounced mā-son) Chandler was born and raised on the ocean world of Picon. His father was a fisherman who instilled a strong love for the sea. His mother was an astrophysicist and university professor that taught him a deep understanding of the cosmos. Macon was a gifted youth, both academically and in athletics. While proficient in the humanities, his greatest academic achievements were in science and math. He studied hard all throughout secondary school and scored in the top five percentile during exams. His athletic achievements were equally amazing. He was chosen as team captain for his Pyramid team in his third and final year (able to graduate a year early due to academic achievements). Macon was set to have full academic and athletic scholarships to over a dozen universities, including two off world universities. He declined all of them when he was accepted to the Picon Defense Force Academy at 17 years of age (with parental consent). Macon spent the next four years gaining the knowledge and skills to be a military officer, as well as, earning a degree in Aerospace Engineering. He graduated as salutarian (second in his graduating class) and was given his choice of assignments. Macon wanted to fly, a childhood dream to soar amongst the stars. He went on to basic and advanced flight school, a year's training, to become a Viper pilot. He was hoping to obtain a cool call sign, but a fishing trip with his fellow flight students resulted in his first catch being a mako shark and the similarity to his given name cemented the call sign (and general nickname) of Mako. Macon ‘Mako’ Chandler's first ship tour was aboard the Battlestar Triton, as a nugget pilot. He was generally relegated to boring Combat Air Patrols (CAP) when the Triton was in orbit of Picon and the majority of the air group was on liberty, hours of simulator time, and the occasional training flight under the watchful eye of a stern flight instructor. Six months into the tour his CAP flight encountered an armed Tauron freighter attempting to board and capture a Virgon passenger liner. His exemplary flying and gunnery skills disabled the freighter until the Triton arrived and forced the surrender of the Ha'la'tha pirate vessel. His actions gained him promotion to Lieutenant j.g and a flight leader's slot with the squadron. Macon received better treatment from the veteran pilots of the air group and his duty assignments improved significantly following the encounter. He proved to be an adept Viper jock during several more skirmishes with outlaw traffic operating near Picon. Becoming an ace by the time his Squadron Commander made the recommendation he attended the Viper Strike Fighter Tactics Program (aka Top Gun), which he graduated at the top of his class. Macon returned to the Triton as the air group training instructor. He served in that billet until the start of the Cylon War, when he was pulled back to a combat squadron as flight leader and squadron executive officer. He scored additional combat kills making him a double ace and along with several combat decorations. Macon received orders to attend the newly formed Colonial Fleet War College on Caprica after the United Colonies of Kobol was ratified by all twelve Colonies. Ten months of intense leadership, strategic, tactical and technical training earned him a promotion to Captain during his tenure at the War College. He received orders to return to Picon, where he assumed he would be rejoining the Triton. He was surprised to be assigned to the recently commissioned Battlestar Pacifica as Squadron Commander for Viper Strike Fighter Squadron 103, the Skull Squadron. Macon has been serving aboard the Battlestar Pacifica for approximately two years and fought in numerous engagements against the Cylons. The most recent battle saw heavy casualties, not only with the air group, but aboard the Pacifica as well. He is now working on building his squadron and the Pacifica Air Group back up to strength as the Battlestar Pacifica undergoes repairs at the Scorpio Shipyard. |
